The 6-Day Machame Route is one of the most popular and highly recommended routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers spectacular scenery, excellent acclimatization, and a high summit success rate. By including an additional acclimatization day at Karanga Camp, climbers have more time to adjust to the altitude, making the journey safer, more comfortable, and increasing the chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
This route traverses diverse ecological zones, from lush rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and the glaciers of the summit, providing an unforgettable trekking experience.

Detailed Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met by our representative and transferred to Under The Shade Safari Lodge in Moshi. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax and prepare for your mountain adventure.
In the evening, meet your lead mountain guide for a detailed climb briefing, route overview, equipment inspection, and safety orientation. This session ensures you are fully prepared for the days ahead.

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate where registration formalities will be completed before beginning your trek. The trail winds through lush tropical rainforest filled with giant trees, ferns, colorful birdlife, and occasional sightings of colobus monkeys.
The gradual ascent allows you to settle into a comfortable trekking pace while enjoying the rich biodiversity of Kilimanjaro's lower slopes.

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail enters the heath and moorland zone. The landscape becomes more open, revealing magnificent views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau.
As you gain altitude, unique alpine vegetation including giant heathers and lobelias begin to appear. The route offers excellent opportunities for photography and acclimatization.

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the mountain. The trail climbs steadily through semi-desert terrain toward Lava Tower, an impressive volcanic rock formation standing at 4,630 meters above sea level.
After lunch at Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude while significantly improving summit success.
Barranco Camp is widely regarded as one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, surrounded by giant groundsels and dramatic mountain scenery.

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the route. After reaching the top, continue across alpine ridges and valleys before arriving at Barafu Camp.
Upon arrival, rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

Shortly after midnight, begin your summit attempt under a sky filled with stars. The trek follows a slow and steady pace as you ascend towards Stella Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable experience, offering breathtaking views above the clouds and across the glaciers of Kilimanjaro. After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, begin the descent to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
This is the longest and most demanding day of the expedition, but also the most rewarding.

After breakfast, continue your descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The lower slopes offer a final opportunity to enjoy Kilimanjaro's rich biodiversity and beautiful scenery.
Upon arrival at the gate, receive your official summit certificate and celebrate your achievement with the mountain crew. You will then be transferred back to Moshi for a hot shower and a well-deserved rest.

After breakfast, enjoy some free time depending on your flight schedule before being transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.
